Your engagement session should be more than just pretty pictures. It should feel like you. The place, the energy the story behind it, it all helps you relax and feel grounded in front of the camera. And if you’re choosing Old Town Alexandria? You’re already halfway there.
As a photographer who works with couples who care about intention and presence, I send a questionnaire to each couple before our session. It helps me understand their personalities and preferences, and it helps them uncover what kind of session will feel natural. When your location has meaning, your photos tell more than just what you look like. They tell who you are.

Old Town Alexandria isn’t just photogenic. It’s layered with everything that makes an engagement session feel elevated, meaningful and versatile. Here’s why it’s one of my favorite places to work:
You can go from waterfront views to cobblestone streets, historic alleys to bustling cafés—all within a 10-minute walk. You get variety without ever needing to drive across town. Visit Alexandria confirms that Old Town is among the most walkable neighborhoods in the region.
The preserved 18th-century architecture, colonial charm, and red-brick facades create timeless backdrops that never go out of style. According to the National Park Service, Old Town was established in 1749 and contains one of the best-preserved historic districts in the country.
Old Town isn’t just a beautiful neighborhood. It’s a location that invites you to slow down and show up as yourselves. And that’s the sweet spot for every engagement session. It should feel like you. The place, the energy, the story behind it. It all helps you relax and feel grounded in front of the camera. And if you’re choosing Old Town Alexandria? You’re already halfway there.
Sarah and Michael live in Washington, DC and already knew Old Town held a big place in their story. We used their questionnaire responses to map out a session that took us through their favorite spots:
They didn’t just walk through a pretty city. They revisited pieces of their relationship. The result? Photos that feel personal, not posed.
Old Town Alexandria is a dream for engaged couples for good reason:
Here are some great go-to photo spots, plus what makes each one special:
Right on the Alexandria Waterfront (City of Alexandria). It offers clean, open backdrops with river views, as well as soft light filtering through the trees.
End your session with a delicious meal! Here are a few local favorites:
Photographing in Old Town is still new to me, but here are some of the secrets I’ve picked up so far:
Q: Do we need a photography permit?
A: Most public areas in Old Town Alexandria and Washington DC don’t require a permit, but certain private locations like museums or historic gardens might.
Q: How long should we plan for our session?
A: Engagement sessions typically last around 45 minutes to an hour. That gives us enough time to explore, ease into things and let the natural rhythm of the session unfold, without ever feeling rushed or over-planned.
Q: What should we wear?
A: I’ll provide you with online styling access and resources to help with the planning. Choose outfits that feel like you! Neutrals and soft, natural tones (like olive, navy, ivory, or muted blush) photograph beautifully and complement the timeless charm of the city. The goal isn’t to match. It’s to feel relaxed, confident and comfortable together.
Q: Can we bring our dog?
A: Yes, please! Old Town is very pet-friendly. If your pup is part of your story, I’d love to include them. Just bring a leash, some water and a friend to help when your dog isn’t in the photo.
Q: Should we bring props?
A: Meaningful props are great! Think of things that are a part of your life.” A bottle of your favorite wine, a blanket you always use, a favorite book, coffee cups from your first date spot, anything that adds a personal layer to your story is more than welcome.
This isn’t just about the images. It’s about the moment.
I always tell my couples: the engagement session is the fun part. No stress. No tight timeline. Just you, your person, and a chance to celebrate the season you’re in. Once we are done photos, you should keep the night going and grab some dinner at one of the many local restaurants!
Old Town makes it easy. Between the charm, the energy and the story it holds, it’s one of the best places near DC to slow down and be present. And the photos? They’ll look how it felt!
Let’s make it happen. Whether you’re local to DC or planning a weekend trip, I’ll help you find the corners of Old Town that fit your story. Your engagement photos should feel like you.
