There’s something about Old City that feels like stepping into another time. The cobblestone streets, colorful shutters, and historic brick facades make it one of the most iconic places for an engagement session in Philadelphia. When couples ask me where to go for photos that feel both classic and personal, Old City is always at the top of my list and Elfreth’s Alley is one of the most-loved spots.
If you’re trying to figure out what season works best for your photos, make sure you check out my blog post: When to Take Engagement Photos in Pennsylvania: A Seasonal Guide.
Elfreth’s Alley is the oldest continuously inhabited residential street in America, right in the heart of Philadelphia’s Old City. Its preserved charm makes it perfect for couples who want engagement photos that feel both timeless and tied to the city’s history.
For a while, photo permits were required here, but that’s no longer the case! Couples can now wander freely, which makes it so much easier to plan a session that flows naturally without extra logistics. On this session, we even stepped one street over, and the sun showed up…a rare treat in the middle of the city that made the evening even more magical.
If you’re considering an engagement session in Philadelphia, Old City should be at the very top of your list. The variety within just a few blocks is unmatched:
Elfreth’s Alley for its iconic cobblestones and colorful shutters.
The Merchant’s Exchange Building for sweeping stone steps and classic architecture.
Hidden courtyards, ivy walls and side streets for more intimate backdrops.
2nd Street cobblestones for a quintessential Philly vibe.
This mix of architecture, greenery and history gives couples a gallery that feels rich and full of variety, mostly all within walking distance.
One of the most common questions I get from couples planning an engagement session is: “How do we make it feel like us?”
I created the blog post 7 Engagement Photoshoot Ideas to Make Your Session Personal to dive deeper into this exact question. Because while Old City and Elfreth’s Alley are beautiful, the most meaningful photos always come from the intentional story behind them.
That’s why I give every couple a free 16-question questionnaire before their session. It’s not about posing or outfits (though I help with those too!) it’s about reflecting on what’s important in your relationship. The questions guide you to think about things like:
Places that carry meaning (your first date spot, your favorite weekend tradition, or even the block where you first met).
The kind of atmosphere that feels right—whether playful and full of laughter, or quiet and intimate.
Personal touches, like a family heirloom, your dog, or a favorite bottle of wine.
When couples take time to reflect, their session becomes more than just pretty photos, it becomes a visual piece of their relationship. Sometimes that means wandering cobblestones in Old City; other times, it means bringing in the rhythm of your everyday life, like a coffee ritual or a walk through your neighborhood. The point is simple: your engagement photos should look and feel like you.
If you’re starting to think about where to go for your Philadelphia engagement photos, here are a few tips I share with my couples:
Choose at least one spot that feels like “you.” Elfreth’s Alley works beautifully paired with a meaningful location, whether that’s where you had your first date, a favorite park, or your go-to coffee shop.
Mix iconic with hidden gems. We’ll grab the signature Elfreth’s Alley portraits, but also slip into side streets and tucked-away corners for photos that feel truly personal.
Philadelphia is full of iconic locations, but the best engagement sessions aren’t just about where we go, they’re about who you are, together.
