If you’ve always pictured your wedding with chandeliers, a big dance floor and a room filled with your favorite people, there are plenty of luxury ballroom wedding venues in South Jersey worth touring. But before you fall in love with the biggest ballroom or the prettiest staircase, I would take a step back and look at how the entire property works for your wedding day.

Ballrooms give you something couples don’t always think about when they’re venue shopping: a strong indoor backup. As a South Jersey Wedding Photographer, this helps us plan for outdoor portraits when the weather is beautiful, but you’re not depending on the weather for the ceremony or the majority of your day. And when a venue has gardens, staircases, windows and interesting architecture in addition to the ballroom, we can create variety without turning portraits into a tour of the entire property.

Indoor Spaces Make Planning Easier

Weather is one of those things couples can’t control, no matter how carefully they plan. A ballroom gives you an indoor option for the parts of the day that absolutely need to happen, while still allowing you to take advantage of outdoor spaces when the weather cooperates.

I still want to know where the best natural light is and where we can go outside for portraits, but I don’t want your entire wedding photography plan to fall apart because it starts raining at 2:00 p.m. A venue with strong indoor spaces gives us another way to make the photographs work without making you feel like the day went wrong.

A Ballroom Doesn’t Mean Every Photo Happens Inside

The reception room might be the reason you booked the venue, but it shouldn’t be the only place you look during your tour. A staircase, garden, window, entrance or outdoor walkway can completely change the look of your photographs without requiring another location.

The trick is knowing which spaces are actually worth using. If there are ten beautiful places on the property, I probably don’t want to photograph you in all ten. I’d rather choose a few that give us genuinely different photographs and leave you more time to enjoy the wedding.

The Merion is one of the larger ballroom wedding venues in South Jersey and one of the most flexible if you’re planning a wedding with a substantial guest list.

What makes it different is that you’re not simply choosing between one ballroom and another. The property currently offers four distinct reception spaces, along with multiple ceremony locations and outdoor areas.

That means your venue decision can be much more specific than simply saying, “We want a ballroom.”

What Makes The Merion Different?

The four ballrooms each have a very different personality.

The Palazzo Ballroom

The Palazzo is designed for larger weddings, accommodating approximately 200 to 550 guests. It features a signature hourglass marble dance floor, nine crystal chandeliers, 20-foot ceilings, a private cocktail room and an outdoor patio.

If your guest list is large and you want the reception to feel substantial rather than crowded, this is one of the rooms I’d look at first.

The Skylight Ballroom

The Skylight Ballroom accommodates up to approximately 250 guests and is centered around its glass dome over the dance floor.

That dome changes the room significantly depending on the time of day. During daylight, it brings natural light into the ballroom. Later, the room takes on a completely different feel.

For photography, that gives us something important: the room itself changes throughout the reception.

The Empire Ballroom

The Empire is The Merion’s newest ballroom and accommodates up to approximately 300 guests.

It has a more contemporary feel, with linen draping, a crystal chandelier, a deluxe bridal suite and a dedicated groomsmen suite.

This would make more sense to me for couples who want the convenience of a large ballroom but don’t necessarily want a traditional ballroom aesthetic.

The Palace Ballroom

The Palace accommodates up to approximately 250 guests and has gold chandeliers, an ivory-and-gold color palette and a private outdoor patio.

It feels more traditional than the Empire while still giving you an outdoor area connected to the reception space.

Ceremony Options

One of The Merion’s strengths is that your ceremony doesn’t have to happen inside the ballroom.

The South Patio can accommodate intimate ceremonies of up to 150 guests and includes waterfalls, landscaping and evergreens. The North Garden provides another outdoor ceremony setting with greenery and florals.

Indoor ballroom ceremonies are also available.

That gives you a real choice rather than simply having an outdoor ceremony with the ballroom as the backup.

My Photography Perspective at The Merion

The Merion gives us a lot to work with, but I wouldn’t try to photograph every single area.

The architecture alone provides plenty of variety, from the grand staircases and ballroom details to the outdoor gardens and patios.

We can photograph family and wedding-party portraits close to the ceremony space, take you somewhere quieter for portraits together and then return to the ballroom before you miss too much of cocktail hour.

Lucien’s Manor | Berlin, NJ

Lucien’s Manor is one of the more visually distinctive ballroom venues in South Jersey.

The property has been family-owned since 1898 and currently offers three ballrooms, indoor and outdoor ceremony options, landscaped grounds and some of the more dramatic architectural details you’ll find in this category.

If you’re drawn to ballrooms because you want something that feels grand, Lucien’s is worth putting on your list.

What Makes Lucien’s Different?

The three ballrooms are genuinely different from one another.

La Grande Ballroom

La Grande has been renovated with 20-foot ceilings, crystal chandeliers, customizable lighting and an indoor waterfall.

It is also the only Lucien’s ballroom with access to the outdoor patio.

That combination gives couples an indoor reception with an easy way to step outside without leaving the venue.

Venetian Ballroom

The Venetian leans heavily into its Italian-inspired architecture.

There is a tiled waterfall, hand-carved fireplace, nine-foot arched windows, crystal chandeliers and a large marble dance floor. The room also has a grand staircase entrance, private entrance, separate kitchen, bridal suites and private restrooms.

This is the room I’d look at if architectural details are one of the main reasons you’re interested in a ballroom wedding.

Versailles Ballroom

The Versailles Ballroom has its own private staircase entrance, crystal chandeliers, marble fireplace and open floor plan.

The balcony also gives guests a view over the reception, which can create a completely different perspective for photographs and the reception itself.

Ceremony Options

Lucien’s offers both indoor and outdoor ceremony options.

The indoor chapel is surrounded by waterfalls and floor-to-ceiling windows, while the outdoor garden includes a marble pergola, landscaped grounds and waterfalls.

That gives couples the convenience of a ballroom while still allowing the ceremony to happen outside if the weather cooperates.

Food and Catering

Lucien’s current wedding information describes a culinary program that includes butler service, chef-attended stations, gourmet hors d’oeuvres, surf-and-turf options, seafood displays, Viennese sweet tables and wedding cakes from the on-site bakery.

The venue also offers customized packages, which is something I’d ask about when comparing it with other ballroom venues.

Food is one of those things that can look similar on a package sheet but feel very different once the wedding actually starts.

Lucien’s gives us something I really like for ballroom weddings: photographic variety without sacrificing the convenience of an indoor venue.

The waterfalls, grand staircase, marble details, gardens and ballroom architecture give you gorgeous areas for photos and if the weather isn’t cooperating, we’re not stuck photographing everything in one corner of a ballroom.

Collingswood Grand Ballroom is one of the venues I’d put on a completely different part of the list.

It doesn’t try to look like a modern hotel ballroom! 

The venue has 1920s-style décor, polished cherry wood details, a dramatic staircase and a wraparound mezzanine overlooking the ballroom.

If you want a ballroom that already has a strong personality before you add a single detail, that’s a major advantage.

What Makes Collingswood Different?

The architecture is the feature.

The grand staircase gives you an obvious entrance moment, while the mezzanine creates another level and perspective over the reception.

That means your photographs don’t have to rely entirely on table details and dance-floor photos.

The building itself becomes part of the gallery.

One Wedding Per Day

This is one of the biggest practical differences between the rest of the ballroom venues on this list.

Collingswood Grand Ballroom says that couples are the only wedding at the location for the entire day. There is no sharing the building’s restrooms or entrances with another wedding.

For couples who care about privacy, that’s worth paying attention to.

You aren’t simply renting a ballroom for a few hours. You’re getting a venue that is focused on your wedding that day.

Getting-Ready Spaces

The venue provides a bridal suite and groom suite in its historic mansion, available two hours before the couple’s arrival. Most of the venues on this list don’t offer a getting ready suite, so this is a huge advantage. 

My Photography Perspective at Collingswood

This is the kind of venue where I’d lean into the architecture! 

The theater, staircase, mezzanine, woodwork and historic details give us photographs that don’t look like they could have been taken in any generic ballroom.

And because the building has such a distinct identity, you don’t need to overcomplicate the portrait plan. It’s also such a great choice for winter weddings.

The Sapphire Grand (previously Adelphia’s) is such a unique spot in Deptford, NJ! 

The property includes a Terrace Room, Ballroom, Grand Ballroom, landscaped gardens and views toward Almonesson Lake. Its current venue information lists capacities ranging from approximately 65 guests in the Terrace Room to up to 450 guests in the Grand Ballroom.

That makes it worth considering if your guest count is still shaping the venue decision.

What Makes The Sapphire Grand Different?

The property gives you both indoor and outdoor options.

The gardens provide a natural setting for ceremonies and portraits, while the reception spaces can accommodate everything from more intimate gatherings to large celebrations.

The main Ballroom accommodates approximately 125 to 250 guests, while the Grand Ballroom can accommodate up to approximately 450 guests.

The Garden and Lake Setting

One of the best parts of The Sapphire Grand is that the venue has approximately two acres of landscaped gardens near Almonesson Lake, giving couples an outdoor setting for portraits and ceremonies.

That can be great for couples who want a ballroom reception but don’t want every photograph to happen indoors!

The biggest photography advantage is having the lake and gardens nearby. It feels like you’re in a magical fairy garden on the bridge overlooking the lake. Did I mention they also have peacocks?!

The biggest advantage is the combination of a large reception environment with formal portrait opportunities. There is gorgeous outdoor landscaping as well as updated modern indoor options. The Mansion was actually just completely renovated a few years ago!

Brigalias gives couples a combination that can be useful if you’re not sure whether you want a fully indoor ballroom wedding or something with an outdoor component.

The venue offers outdoor ceremony possibilities, landscaped grounds and an indoor ballroom reception, allowing couples to move between the two without changing properties.

What Makes Brigalias Different?

The flexibility is the main attraction.

You can have the ceremony outside, use the grounds for portraits and then move inside for dinner and dancing.

That can give you some of the visual variety couples want from an outdoor wedding while maintaining the predictability of an indoor reception. They have so many different styles here, ranging from a barn, chapel, ballrooms and Greek staircase paintings.

For me, the question would be how the outdoor ceremony area connects to your wedding.

They have MANY different vibes here, so we’d work together to really figure out what parts of the property you feel drawn to, so oyur photos reflect the day you’re planning! If you love their ballroom and chapel, then the barn / Greek paintings most likely aren’t your vibe.

Which Luxury Ballroom Wedding Venue Is Right for You?

Each of these venues gives you a different version of the ballroom wedding experience, so I would start with what actually matters to you instead of trying to decide which venue is the “best.” Because honestly? The best venue is the venue that fits your guest count, your priorities and the way you actually want your wedding day to move.

Things to Consider Before Choosing a Ballroom Wedding Venue

When you’re touring ballroom wedding venues, don’t only look at the reception room! Walk through the day in your head. Where will you get ready? Where will the ceremony happen? Where will family photos happen? How far is the portrait location from the reception? And what happens if you want ten minutes of sunset portraits while your guests are enjoying dinner?

I’d also ask to see the venue’s rain plan rather than just asking whether they have one. You want to know where your ceremony would happen, where we could photograph you and whether you would still be happy with the experience if it rains. A good venue should work for your wedding even when the weather doesn’t cooperate.

And if cocktail hour matters to you, tell your photographer before the timeline is built! Sometimes we can do most of your portraits before the ceremony. Sometimes we can take a short portrait window afterward. Sometimes ten minutes outside during dinner is all we need. There isn’t one timeline that works for every couple.
