When couples start planning engagement photos, one of the first questions they usually ask is where the session should take place.
Most people begin by searching for beautiful locations, but the best engagement sessions often start with a different question:

It’s actually one of the questions we ask every couple while planning their engagement session because the locations that feel most natural are usually the ones that already hold a place in your story together. If you’re curious about the full planning process we use with our couples, you can read more about our 7 Engagement Photoshoot Ideas to Make Your Session Personal.
For Carly and Ed, the answer was easy.
They chose Cape May, New Jersey, a place that has been woven into their lives for years. Carly’s mom owns a home near the bay, and it’s where they spend summers together, walk the beach, grab coffee and enjoy time away from the pace of everyday life.
As a South Jersey wedding photographer, I’ve found that couples usually relax much faster when they’re somewhere familiar. You already show up feeling comfortable which makes it easier to focus on each other and enjoy the time together.

If you’re considering Cape May engagement photos, it’s easy to understand why so many couples continue to choose this Jersey Shore destination. If you’re just visiting for the weekend, make sure you read my Cape May Weekend Guide for an entire weekend itinerary!
Cape May by the Washington Street Mall offers a combination of beautiful beaches, waterfront views, Victorian architecture and the coziest walkable streets that create so much variety!
You can spend part of your session near the shoreline, explore areas around Congress Hall, walk through town (make sure you check out the classic Gazebo!) and finish the evening by the water.
What makes Cape May different from many other beach towns is its pace.
People come here to slow down and you can feel it everywhere. That slower atmosphere naturally creates engagement sessions that feel more relaxed and enjoyable.
For couples throughout South Jersey and the Jersey Shore, it makes for an easy getaway while still feeling completely different from everyday life.

One thing I always encourage couples to think about is whether a location reflects their actual life together.
Carly and Ed could have chosen almost any beach along the Jersey Shore.
Instead, they chose a place that already mattered.
They spend time here throughout the summer. It’s where they make memories together. It’s where they naturally find themselves returning whenever they want a break from everyday routines.
Because of that, they didn’t spend the session trying to connect with the location.
They already had that connection.
Because Cape May was already familiar to them, they were able to settle into the session quickly.

Absolutely! It is truly one of my favorite spots.
Cape May works especially well for couples who want a session that feels relaxed and personal.
Some of the biggest advantages include:
Beach views, bay views, historic streets and iconic Cape May landmarks all exist within a relatively small area.
Couples from South Jersey and Philadelphia can easily turn their session into a day trip or weekend getaway.
Many couples already have memories tied to Cape May through family vacations, summer homes or years of visiting together.
For many couples, Cape May isn’t just a beautiful location. It’s a place they’ve been returning to for years.

Before the session, Carly and Ed shared something I hear from many of my couples.
They told me they didn’t love being in front of the camera. Honestly, most people feel the same way.
The good news is that feeling comfortable in photos usually has very little to do with knowing how to pose. That is literally my job✌🏼📸
And one tip I’m always sharing with my clients? Feeling calm in front of the camera has far more to do with feeling comfortable in your environment.
When you’re walking through a place that already feels familiar, conversations happen naturally. The focus shifts away from the camera and back toward each other.
That’s exactly what happened throughout Carly and Ed’s session.

The biggest takeaway from this session has nothing to do with posing, outfits or locations.
It’s this:
Choose a place you already enjoy returning to together.
The most successful engagement sessions aren’t necessarily the ones at the most popular locations, they’re the ones that reflect who you are as a couple.
Every location creates a different experience. If you’re still deciding where to plan your engagement photos, these sessions may help:
Each of these sessions took place somewhere different, which is a good reminder that there isn’t one perfect location for engagement photos. The best location is usually the one that already feels familiar to you.

One of my favorite things about engagement sessions is that they create an opportunity to pause and make space to spend time together and remember why you’re doing all of this in the first place!
For Carly and Ed, that meant returning to a place that already felt like home.
If you’re planning engagement photos, a proposal or your wedding day in Cape May, South Jersey or along the Jersey Shore, I’d love to hear more about what you’re planning.
